Say Cheese! San Diego Dental Society’s New Website is Ready for Its Close-Up

Say Cheese! San Diego County Dental Society’s New Site is Ready for Its Close-Up

By | Clients, Design, Websites | No Comments

The San Diego County Dental Society has many things to be proud of – 2,000 members (70 percent of its area’s dentists), an active role in the betterment of its community and increasing access to dental care, to name a few – and now, they can add an impressive website to the list!

SDCDS came to Counterintuity with a few changes in mind, and here’s what we delivered:

  • A sleek new style. We knew a modern look was important to them, but didn’t skimp on substance. This site packs a functional punch!
  • Improved member services. SDCDS’s members are the heart of the society. Click-to-pay, click-to-schedule and click-to-post are all new additions aimed at giving them the smooth user experience they deserve.
  • Responsive + WordPress. We submitted 30 pages, 10 wireframes, 2 website mockups and 3 subpage mockups so we could be sure SDCDS was getting exactly what they wanted.
  • Updated features. Event management, dentist search, job listings, a donations center and member portal are all now easily accessible.

It’s an honor to work with this organization, and we’re confident this site will offer its members stellar support through the advocacy, education, and business management SDCDS is famous for.

11 ways to make your website stand out

11 ways to make your website stand out

By | Content Marketing, Email Marketing, Viral Video, Websites | One Comment

The internet is a big place. Accordingly, you don’t want people playing “Where’s Waldo?” with your website. Here are 11 ways to help your website stand out from the crowd.

  1. Give people something extra. In exchange for their email signup, give them a downloadable how-to, some free research, or a coupon code.
  2. Update frequently. And show them where the updates are, with a news scroll, or blog preview, or even a popup.
  3. Focus your visitors’ eyes on one thing. Remember, you can’t focus on multiple things – that’s the opposite of “focus.” So point people to the key thing you want them to do, and make sure it also benefits them.
  4. Make it fun. Graphically, and with words.
  5. Make it searchable. Because we’re busy, and we expect everything now. If you’ve got a lot of content, no one is going to hunt around in your site, so help them find it.
  6. Add a blog. Certainly you know things. Share them. Become a recognized expert.
  7. Update it at least 11 times a month. (And triple your traffic.)
  8. Make sure it’s mobile friendly! More than 70% of all visits to the internet are via mobile. Run this; if you failed the test, you’d better address this quickly, because it’s already dampening your traffic.
  9. Use video! Research shows that video will keep people on a web page an average of 50% longer – and the longer they stay there, the more likely they are to get involved.
  10. Think “headlines and graphics.” Because that’s what people will see, that’s what you should spotlight. Supporting text is just there for support. (And for SEO.)
  11. Be you. Whether “you” is just you, or an entire team at your company, no one else can be you, so you should be good at it. Make the site sound like you, look like you, and make sure it reflects your values. Because just as there’s someone for everyone, there are people searching for a company like yours. Make sure it’s you they find.

Help, I don’t have enough visitors!

Help, I don’t have enough visitors!

Of course you don’t, and it’s normal – you’re new on the block and that’s OK. Kick your new website or brand new landing page off with the online equivalent of an Open House: Run an Ad Campaign. (Facebook and Google Ads are our favorite platforms.)

If you don’t announce yourself, how will people know you’ve arrived?

The great part of running Ad Campaigns? It boosts your searchability. It’s like the internet knows to give you a nametag, and sets you up at the punchbowl.

What are you waiting for? What’s your line?

Client Feature: VEDC Entrepreneur Center Award of Excellence

Client Feature: VEDC Entrepreneur Center Award of Excellence

By | Awards, Clients, Websites | No Comments

We’re pleased to announce that the VEDC Entrepreneur Center, a recent addition to the C! client roster, has already gotten two award-winning projects out of Counterintuity’s handiwork.

“While The Entrepreneur Center is owned by a national non-profit, VEDC, it is in essence a new business,” says Warren Cooley, managing director of the Center. “It’s a 13,800 square foot building, located on a major thoroughfare, Van Nuys Boulevard, in an underserved part of the City of Los Angeles (Northeast San Fernando Valley), offering a range of programs and co-working space for businesses – all of this by design! Critical to the Center’s success, however, will be electronic media, with the primary platform being an interactive website. Thanks to Counterintuity, we have a first-rate website and social media tools.”

Mr. Cooley wasn’t the only one impressed by our site – the Communicator Awards granted it an Award of Excellence for a Website in the Charitable Organizations / Non-Profit category.

What helped us to get this website just right? A tour of the client’s beautiful building! Built in Pacoima only one year ago, the Entrepreneur Center’s bright colors and distinctive look made an impression before we even walked through the door.

“The initial inspiration for our design work was the architecture of the building,” says our designer, Val. “We took a tour and then I did a little more research and found the architect who designed the building. He described their inspiration of a famous artist and then we designed the website to show that off. The website was a representation of the building – bold colors, very minimalist – and that was the inspiration for the architect and the artist who inspired him. Their building was like a piece of art, so we replicated that.”

We stuck to that same theme when creating the Entrepreneur Center’s logo. “The logo is a reflection of the building,” says Val. “The building looks like an icon, and it’s also functional for what they do – they’re a co-working space – so we thought it could be used as a symbol.”

The Entrepreneur Center focuses on providing small businesses with the knowledge, capital and workspace they need to achieve big success, and we consider it an honor to create marketing materials that reflect this great organization’s merit.

Client feature: The Acres’ website wins 2016 Communicator Award of Excellence

Client feature: The Acres’ website wins 2016 Communicator Award of Excellence

By | Awards, Clients, Design, Websites | One Comment

This November, we launched a newly redesigned website for The Acres, a state-of-the-art dressage training facility. We thought the final product looked fantastic – and the Communicator Awards agreed! Our responsive website won the 2016 Communicator Award for Websites in the Sports Category.

According to their site, “The Award of Excellence, our highest honor, is given to those entrants whose ability to communicate positions them as the best in the field.” With more than 6,000 entries this year, we’re pretty pleased to have made it to the top.

So what set The Acres apart from the rest? We believe it was the approach of our designer, Val, who used a video from the client as the basis for a dynamic home page. “I got inspired by what I saw in the video. The video was so elegantly done that it represented who they are, and that’s what a website is supposed to do.”

The Acres’ ranch manager, Amy Ebeling, was quite pleased with the outcome.

“Counterintuity took my outdated website and with the use of imagination, beautiful photography/video, and smart streamlining information, turned it into a beautiful website that everyone loves and admires. I was very detailed and insisted on including a huge amount of information about our business, our team, and also our farm in the scope of the project. More than just the template, I wanted a feel that emulates our everyday lifestyle at The Acres, so that someone looking at the website can feel the level of passion we have for our work. Amy Kramer and her team were able to capture and display the information, but more importantly convey the feel and love we have for our sport, our horses, and the people with which we surround ourselves. I could not be happier with the result; it is a testament to Counterintuity’s hard work and professionalism.”

We’d like to thank the Communicator Awards for recognizing the talents of the Counterintuity team members who made this award possible.

This isn’t the only Award of Excellence we snagged this year – stay tuned for our next client feature.

Responsive Rumors

5 Responsive Rumors

By | Design, Websites | No Comments

Much like the most popular girl in high school, responsive web design is beautiful, intriguing and comfortable in almost all situations. For these reasons, it’s also had to deal with a fair amount of rumors. Some of the most common misconceptions?

  • Responsive design is too expensive. Responsive design doesn’t have to be pricey, and designers are always working toward more cost-effective methods.
  • It will mess with SEO. Responsive sites actually rank higher in search results due to quicker loading times and larger amount of users.
  • It’s only for mobile. Responsive doesn’t discriminate. It’s not just about optimizing for an iPhone, but for all screen types.
  • It will slow down loading time. If anything, responsive design will improve your load time.
  • It’s all you need. Going responsive is a step in the right direction, but it’s not a reason to stop walking. It will improve the format of your site, not the content – even responsive can’t make a typo look good!

So don’t believe everything you hear. And if you’re still a little too shy, let Counterintuity introduce you to responsive web design! We’re used to hanging with the cool kids.

The Acres: Client Shout-Out

The Acres: Client Shout-Out

This week’s post is going to be half congratulatory, half self-congratulatory. ‘Cause guess what? We finished The Acres’ new website! And we must say, it’s looking pretty snazzy. Which is good news for them. And good news for us, too!

The Counterintuity team had tons of fun learning more about the art of dressage, sorting through photos of The Acres’ beautiful facility, and compiling the timeline for Jan Ebeling’s impressive career.

We’re incredibly proud to unveil this site, and wish The Acres all the success (and satisfied clientele) in the world!
